Oppositelock is comprised of many different people, of many different backgrounds, we have over 2600 authors and a rather large contingent of lurkers. We have opponauts from every continent (excepting, that I am aware of, Antarctica) and from most nearly every major ethnicity worldwide, we have opponauts who are gay, straight, bi, and those who fall outside of these simple definitions. We have opponauts who come from all walks of life, and yet, 99% of the time we are a united blog which is based on our universal love of the mechanisms which literally move us and/or those around us.
Tonight there was a major event which occurred at the heart of the country which many of us call home. Race and power are subjects which are directly in the middle of this ongoing, currently escalating situation. I do not believe that keeping people from talking about this situation, among their adopted community (oppo) will lead to any good for anyone. Though the standard rules of oppositelock will still hold true for all commenters. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination. If a subset of you would like to post about this subject, all we ask is that you keep anything which could clearly be interpreted as a controversial opinion, after the jump, and that you warn what the content is within the area which is visible without clicking into the post.
Sometimes avoidance is the best way to deal with a subject. Personally I do not believe that this is the case with this situation. This community, for all of its issues, for all of its flaws, for all of the drama it has endured, is a community. Let's support each other. If you want to talk about race and politics and Ferguson, do so, but be respectful of those around you.
With this in mind, we structured the rules the way we did to allow for this type of discussion when needed. Technically speaking Oppo has no rules prohibiting political discussion. We only ask that these posts are given a warning in the title, similar to NSFW, and that the discussion remain civil and behind the jump. And by civil, I mean being respectful, staying away from stereotypes and personal attacks and avoiding resorting to crude humor to express yourself.
We have no desire to censor anyone or to remove authors from this community, but if needed, we will. If you see content which is offensive please flag it. We will be checking the flags regularly.
Be safe.

You go Gamecat. I'd just like to say that despite our differences, we are an incredibly united community. I really am proud of us. Go Oppo.

I am as liberal as it is possible to be ... and I already blog for a high-traffic political blog every few months, and for a low-traffic political blog whenever I want. I avoid the political stuff here - would rather keep it about shooting brakes and the problematic VW and Audi front ends. If you want me to comment on where you are, I will, but I urge all of you who are vulnerable to get away from anyplace you can get hurt, whether it be by protestor or police, or by white supremacist, if those assholes show up. Live to blog/comment another day.

I think its also important to note (quoting ubel here, not my words) that we may be able to repost something that was made private by the mods for not having an "after the jump" if we edit it to include one. I think this fact needs more publicity, many of us dont know we can edit our deleted posts to comply with the rules and not have them removed again. I didnt even know this until ubel pointed it out to me tonight

Already censured, 'Cat.
Agreed with the logic, and the need for an outlet.
greyed on the FP, for no reason at all.
What gives?

I would rather that these topics not be pertinent. But they are. And for some of our community, this is their outlet, this is their community, and this is too big to simply ignore. That said, what I am asking for is some basic civility in a moderated forum.
I intend on mostly avoiding the direct conversations as I am having enough of them in real life. But I don't want to take away a voice from someone who may be affected by this.
There may be better avenues for many of us, but not for all.

Ferguson needs some flaming burnouts to help unite the People.

This 100%. The important thing isn't the politicalness of this but making sure all of us are 100% safe to blog and talk to each other another day. This is a messy situation and bringing in racism to bring down fellow oppos shouldn't be tolerated, instead we should be arguing over the z06 and hellcat.

If this is the only place some of us can vent, then let it commence. I will never stand in the way of others voicing their opinions, I can only decide whether I want to add mine. Here, most likely, I don't. Thanks for pointing me straight.

I don't disagree with you. Which was the purpose of my post and my response to Steve. I'd rather talk all day about why I lust after an OG mini or a 242GT. But here we are. This will pass, but some may need to talk about it. For some this has become their circle, their group, their community. Let's try to frame the conversation and be respectful.

Here in NYC I know not to head down to Times Square on New Years Eve. Likely to get in trouble, or at least squashed against a big guy when the ball drops. And don't go in the water where there are sharks. And don't go into the woods where there are bears. Same for Oppo - don't drive through an area that might cause you to get pulled over and fucked over. Please people ... stay safe.

I had a family member just drive through St. Louis on his way to my home in Central Il. from Texas. He had to late of a notice to know what was happening, but had no issues. Most of St. Louis is amazing, especially the food (a lot of hidden gems of places). Like you said, "don't go into the water where there are sharks," the area of Ferguson should be avoided, and if any Oppo lives in that area I hope they are safe tonight.

Hi, i have a non related question to the post, How or when does one get out of the gray comments on Jalopnik?
Is it by getting followed by Jalopnik? I never post offensive stuff there, nor in Oppo.

Like that knucklehead that got eaten in Grizzly Man (Werner Herzog documentary). Bears are in the woods. Live with bears, sooner or later they figure out you're a late lunch. Or a light snack for 3 bears.

The front page is purely the domain of jalopnik. You'll need to be followed by jalopnik (keep commenting, you'll get there, wit and intelligence get you there faster, but consistency has it's place as well).

Actually, RE: Antarctica..... I don't think he's been on much since he's been down there but Opponaut Jeremy Bloyd-Peshkin IS actually at Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station at the current time. So yeah, we've covered the entire world. Literally.

Very Thoughtful and thanks. Another good outlet is to type out the entire screed ( Liberal or Conservative ) and then erase it before you post...( like this ) " ". Keep on Truckin'
